And again, trout, redfish and Spanish at Redfish U.-July 23, 2010

Guided Brian Enabnit and friend, Doug, this morning. They absolutely whacked the speckled trout this morning on topwater baits. In a few hour period, 25-30 trout were brought to the boat including some nice 3-3.5# fish and Brian’s pig trout at 5#. Stopped at a few more great areas and picked up more trout and a 25.5# fat redfish as well. Again, the guys wanted lots of late morning action so we split for the Pass to find some great Spanish mackerel action on spoons but no sharks or tarpon this time although we did see one tarpon leap in the distance. Lots of fish were taken back to Destin for a cookout! Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Redfish, trout, Spanish, sharks, tarpon and more at Redfish University-June 21, 2010

Guided Brian and Phil Enabnit for a two day trip. Started early with some topwater action for trout and redfish. Lots of fish on topwaters and then switched to Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads once the sun rose. The surprise catch was a 40# drum in the same area as the trout and redfish. Around 9am, we took off for Pensacola Pass where the fellas wanted to target some Spanish Mackerel, sharks and more. Fished the beach west of the Pass and immediately found lots of Spanish and sharks. Sightfished some 4-5′ blacktips with many hookups and jumps but no sharks actually landed but lots of fun nonetheless. Brian hooked an 80-100# tarpon on a Gulp Jerkshad which didn’t last long on 10# braid and a 20# fluoro leader. Great action along the beach, an area I haven’t fished in a month or so. All fish released except for some nice trout for dinner. Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Painfully slow but very nice redfish(14.5# again!) at Redfish University-April 10, 2010

Guided Dr. Jay Erickson this morning. Neap tides today but at Redfish U. we expect to catch any fish within casting distance. Doctor’s hours require Sat/Sun trips and today the weekend angler traffic was thrilling. Arrived at our first area very early and was able to stuck some quality redfish and trout before the warriors arrived. Trailered the boat to a new, more isolated location and also found a very slow bite although we managed a 7.5# under 27″ fish. Sightfished the shallows for the rest of the morning with a few redfish taken but they were really difficult. Jay and I will hit them again in a few weeks for a makeup trip since I thought the day was unsatisfactory. All fish taken on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads rigged with Marsh Works jighead and Johnson 1/4oz. Gold Spoons. All fish released. Please click an image to enlarge and view...

The End of an Up and Down Year- September 1, 2009

Well, the 2009 Redfish Cup season had come to a close. After starting the year in fine fashion, placing 16th and receiving a nice check in Punta Gorda, we started an uncharacteristic free-fall. Kemah was a big disappointment(should have fished the jetties, obviously, and entered the “fishing lotto”, and Chalmette still haunts us today. At the regular season ending event in Biloxi, we took a whole new approach. We prefished for 6 hours!! Yes, we knew where some very nice 28-30″ were in the Biloxi Marsh. A little pond on the outside that was full of oysters was the promised-land. Went there on Wednesday afternoon during a low tide and tails and wakes were everywhere. Jetted straight there on tournament morning, got a 10# and a 9.5# and slow cruised back arriving at 11:30am and took a nap. Ended up in 7th place after Day 1 with 19.45#. Great start and knew we could do the same on Saturday. Day 2-jetted back to the same oyster pond, stuck two great fish- both over 9.5#! We’re feeling pretty good but still looking for a 10# fish to secure the Top 5. Had a few chances and a few that were 9.5# but it was also a great idea to visit a few other areas nearby just in case we would be returning on Sunday to clean-house. Back at the weigh in, it was a little nerve-racking. Finally, it was our turn to weigh in and we secured 5th place with 19.38# with only 10 teams left to weigh in. With only 3 teams left, my fears came true as we were only worried about what the Watts Brothers would bring to the scales. We heard the weigh, but it took a few minutes for them to officially announce what position that weight would put them in. Crap!! They bested us by .19 of a pound!! We were happy for the Bryan and Greg who are awesome fellas but felt pretty shocked after what a disappointing 2009 season we had. No complaints with a 6th place!! We had a great two days of fishing and secured our exemption into the 2010 Redfish Cup where I assure you, we’ll do much, much...

Redfish Cup Punta Gorda-May 1-3, 2009

The first Redfish Cup event of 2009 took place in Punta Gorda, FL. on May 1-3. We were greeted with some difficult tides and conditions. We found the larger fish to be very uncooperative and set a goal of concentrating on more catchable redfish as this event would be the trickiest of the year. Each morning, we quickly secured two medium-sized fish in the well and then concentrated on a small group of redfish that were 26-30″ in hopes of grabbing a few quality tournament fish for upgrades. Ended up getting some over-slot fish and then going back to some other fish that would help us in the end. I found that the Berkley Gulp! 3″ Shrimp in camo were the ticket for both sightfishing and blindcasting holes along mangrove flats. All in all, a difficult event but we accomplished our goal and got 17.59# to secure 16th place and a nice check for $3500. Sometimes it’s best to play the tricky venues on the conservative side especially since the Redfish Cup Championship is right here in Pensacola, FL. in late September. Thank you very much for all the words of encouragement and best wishes, we represented Pensacola well and will continue to do so for the rest of the year. Photos to follow. Eric...
