**Last minute cancellation this Saturday and Sunday if anyone is interested in booking with Redfish University this Labor Day weekend. Fishing is always great at Redfish U.!! Great opportunity to fish with RU. Guided Mr. Kevin Reynolds this morning in the far eastern reaches of Santa Rosa Sound. Hit the water at 530am and ran way east. Pulled out some topwaters and Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads and got after it. Lots of nice speckled trout, some decent redfish, but also lots of undesirables such as ladyfish, bluefish and jacks. Made some small adjustment and stayed on the redfish and speckled trout. Poling some shallow areas and found the redfish to be pretty cooperative compared to the western end of the South(less boat traffic and anglers.) Got some very nice redfish to take our 3″ Gulp! Ghost Shrimp in 2′ of water. Lot of fun this morning with a very good angler. **Notice** Had a last minute cancellation on Sat and Sun, so those days are now open. No big deal, love to have the weekend off but the fishing at Redfish University has been stellar if anyone wants to go Sat. and/or Sun(Labor Bay...Read More
Trying to catch up on some rescheduled trips from last week’s Tropical Depression and overall crap weather. Guided Mr. Mitch Smith this morning and took a bumpy ride east in search of some redfish and trout. Started at first light with a 4# trout. Nice start but it was really hit or miss at several places today. Concentrated on a stretch of pretty clear water with depths ranging from 2-4′. Got quite a few 2-3# fish on topwaters but the fish were pretty difficult to raise because of the freshwater invasion in these areas. Fortunately, a loud subsurface bait did the trick and lots of very nice trout fell victim to the bait. We were also able to get several fish on the Berkley Powerbaits with rattle inserts. Come to think of it, we should have thrown the Berkley Rattle Shrimp in today’s yucky water. Oh well, Mitch received a few in his Redfish University goodies bag so maybe he’ll use them on his next trout fishing adventure. Covered lots of water this morning and only found big concentrations of fish in one big area so that’s where we returned. We saw a few redfish and redfish wakes but only one strike which spit the hook. Today’s trout total was 25-30 fish of all sizes, even caught a half trout after a shark clipped him in half. Hopefully the rain will stop in the next few days and the fishing will get a little better but we’re not complaining. Today’s tip: Clean, moving water with bait. No photos...Read More
Fortunately, we’re still getting quite a few calls/emails and running some trips at Redfish University. The bays and inland waters are clear of oil, although there are some very productive areas protected by oil boom. Guided Mr. Derrick Grant and his son this morning for some redfish and trout action. Hit the water at 515am and set out for some early morning topwater action. Found the north facing banks to be a bit turbulent but the fish were there. Stuck some 3.5-5# speckled trout but no redfish on this pass. Ran to some marshy banks protected by boom and wasn’t quite able to reach the prime areas near the banks. We did find some quality trout off the banks including a nice 4# fish. Derrick hooked a heavy fish that made two crackling runs only to split the 20# fluoro leader. My guess was a small tarpon and large tripletail or possibly a shark, but it was fun while it lasted. Ended up plugging away for a few more trout and redfish including a decent 4.5# redfish at the end. Pretty tough today but we managed some decent fish and missed quite a few more. All fish taken on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads/Marsh Works Jigheads and Skitterwalks for the topwater fishing. All fish released. Please click an image to enlarge and view...Read More
Redfish University continues normal guiding operations from Pensacola to Panama City(Port St. Joe). On days off, we will assist with BP oil spill issues if the need arises. With a long string of trips approaching and no cancellations in the coming weeks, I got out for a few hours today to locate some redfish and trout after the last five days of bad weather. Made it look easy with lots of redfish, trout and flounder taken on various baits including Gulp! Jerkshads, Baitfish, Shrimp, Lipless Cranks and even some decent topwater action. Fished for two hours and boated 7 redfish, 15 trout and 2 flounder. Lots of great fish around right now and Redfish University knows where they are and, most importantly, how to catch them! Trips tomorrow, Thursday and Friday and next week so we’ll report back soon. See everyone at Redfish U. soon. Yours, Eric...Read More
As a Berkley Pro Staff angler, I have some great opportunities to travel and introduce anglers to new products from the world’s largest fishing company, Pure Fishing. From March 25-27, I joined Berkley Marketing/Team Coordinator, Scott Dubiel, and FL/GA/AL Senior Regional Sales Rep., Kevin Benton, for the 2010 Eastern FL Panhandle Berkley/Penn Tour in Panama City, Destin and Port St. Joe. Highlights of this year’s event included the new Penn Conquers, the Penn Torque Spinning reels, the Penn Sargus Series and the new Berkley Gulp! Ghost Shrimp. As always, we stayed at the beautiful Bay Point Marriott and will return in the summer with the Penn Tour for the 2010 Bay Point Invitational Billfish Tournament. The Berkley/Penn Tour will visit Pensacola, Gulf Breeze and Navarre on May 20-22. See everyone there! Had a few days off from guiding but back at it hard next week with trips Mon-Saturday then heading to WalMart in Bentonville, AR. next Monday and Tuesday. See everyone soon!
