Finally found them at Redfish University-March 16, 2010

Guided Mr. Fred McGafferty and Mr. David McGafferty this morning. Started out in the upper bays looking for redfish and trout but the combination of dirty water and little water movement from the neap tide made things difficult. Picked off one 5.5# speckled trout and a few smaller ones. Also got a few small redfish. With things looking grim up there, we decided to cruise south in search of clear water and redfish. We immediately found a great area to sightfish redfish in the 29-42″ range. Stuck plenty of 12-21# redfish in 4-8ft of water. All fish caught on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads rigged with Marsh Works Jigheads. Also worth mentioning, these big fish were taken on 6# and 10# Berkley Crystal and Spiderwire Ultracast InvisiBraid. All fish release. Heading to Jacksonville tonight for the first HT3 Cup East event. See everyone next week!! Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Part 1-Big Trout at Redfish University-March 14, 2010

Guided Dr. Jay Erickson on this beautiful Sunday morning. Jay wanted to learn about the speckled trout near his home and then go catch some redfish in the backwaters in the coming weeks. The winds laid down for us and although we had a neap tide with very little water movement, we really stuck it to some big trout. In fact, we didn’t catch a speckled trout under 4 pounds and had a few fish a bit over 5 pounds. Fished some deeper potholes and had to trust that these fish were laying out the bottom. Caught a bunch and missed even more!  Also, landed a small redfish in the same area.  All fish taken on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads rigged with Marsh Works jigheads. All fish handled with great care and released healthy. Part II in the coming weeks! Stay...

Freezing cold at Redfish University-January 10, 2010

Redfish University is still running trips!! It’s cold but the fish are really cooperative. Short, 25 mph runs keep things as comfortable as possible for clients and once the catching begins, the coldest temps will be forgotten. More trout than redfish at the moment but the quality of fish is very good. Quality cold-weather gear, face protection, gloves and warm socks are a must! See ya soon. Guided Mr. Larry McAdoo  this morning here in Pensacola. Larry is a recent Houston transplant to the Pensacola area and a long-time Hewes flats boat owner. Today was the coldest conditions I have ever fished. The temperature range in Redfish University’s Ford Diesel 7.3 Excursion registered at 24 degrees at takeoff time and only rose to 37 degrees at noon. Nevertheless, redfish and trout were found and redfish and trout were caught. Over 25 quality trout and 12-15 redfish were landed in extremely harsh conditions. In fact, we were having a difficult time casting because of the icebergs forming between the guides on our rods! This is the first time I have EVER seen this!!! Anyway, it was an extremely cold but productive morning of redfish and speckled trout. All fish caught on Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads in Lime Tiger and Gulp! 3″ Shrimp in Natural. Rattles increased strikes and ALL fish released. Please click an image  to...

Quantity but not quality at Redfish University-December 26, 2009

Guided Capt. Skip Barry this morning. Capt. Skip was down from Michigan and is a salmon and trout guide up on Lake Michigan with his charter service Terminator Sport Fishing. Skip has fished all over the world and I was very pleased to show him how to catch redfish on artificials here in NW Florida. Started out on some shallow water schools at first light. Stuck a few quality fish but mostly bottom slot fish with some decent trout mixed in. As the water rose, we concentrated on some deeper uneven bottom and picked up many legal trout, redfish and 7-8 small stripers which were fun. Caught fish pretty much all morning but the quality redfish were difficult today with the exception of one 26-27″ fish that was boat-side only to split the leader. Crap!! Anyway, the total for the day was 20+ small-medium redfish, 20+ quality trout and 7-8 small stripers. 2 redfish and 5 nice trout were kept for the grill. All fish caught on 3″ Gulp! Shrimp in New Penny and Lime Tiger as well as 5″ Gulp! Jerkshads in Lime...
