Sightfishing Extravaganza at Redfish University-April 29, 2010

Guided Mark Battia and Dave this morning. Both are very talented anglers and although today was difficult at times, they really showed some solid skills. Started in the upper bays for some big trout. Found some very nice speckled trout pretty quickly with some redfish and flounder in the mix. The lack of mullet made things difficult but we stuck 12-15 very nice trout between 2-3.5#. Next, sightfishing was on our minds so we traveled to some very clear water. Immediately found big schools of redfish in shallow water and got to work. It may have been the full moon but these fish were pretty difficult at first but when the tide changed, they really started to bite. Mark and Dave were able to sight fish many redfish in shallow, clear water with some very nice casts and exciting strikes. Even a few double hookups were achieved!!! I enjoyed the awesome view from the poling platform as they picked off redfish along the bank. I hope to fish with both guys again very soon. Challenging but very enjoyable trip for us all. All fish caught on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads and all redfish were sight fished with Johnson 1/4oz. Gold Spoons. Some trout, flounder and smaller redfish went home for the grill. High expectations today at Redfish University-April 12, 2010

Guided a tough crowd today for a little prefishing in some areas that I haven’t fished in a long time. Brought my dad and brother who always expect an epic morning with me in any conditions. The last of the neap tide again today, but we found plenty of redfish, trout and flounder. Redfish were tough, trout nearly every cast and saw plenty of flounder including a nearly 4# fish caught by young Wesley. All fish caught on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads. Kept some nice flounder and trout for dinner. Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Redfish, Trout, Flounder and Stripers at Redfish U.-October 24, 2009

Guided Mr. George Converse and his friend from Birmingham this morning. These guys were excellent anglers and really fun to fish with! I was a little concerned with the passing front, the high pressure and the west wind, but we really caught alot of fish today. With all species being pretty sluggish today, we focused on very, very slow retrieve techniques, boat positioning for optimal casting angles and the use of worm rattles in our Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads rigged with 1/4oz. Marsh Works bull red jigheads. We found plenty of redfish and trout on some wind-blown banks and creek drains. We also picked off some nice trout and flounder in some open-water areas with uneven bottom. To our surprise, 2 small striped bass were brought to the boat. Bait presentation and rattle was the key today. We focused on areas where there were good numbers of fish and used a “tap, tap, tap, stop” retrieval which proved to be too much for the fish to handle. Lots of bites on resting baits, pick-ups and falls which indicated these fish were following and interested, but just needed to smell the Gulp!  All together we stuck 12-15 Redfish of all sizes, 15-20 trout from 12-17″, a 3# flounder and 2 striped bass. A great day under difficult conditions. Please click on a photo to...

Foggy morning at Redfish University-Oct. 8, 2009

Fished with my friend and fellow tournament angler, Mike Tindal, this morning in Blackwater and Pensacola Bay. Found some small tailing fish in some shallow areas but they were pretty difficult. Ended up sticking some good quality fish in sandy bottom areas with lots of mullet. Also caught some decent trout and a very nice flounder in the same areas. Buzzed some other areas around the bay and saw quite a few fish. All fish...
