April, 2010

Guided Mark Battia and Dave this morning. Both are very talented anglers and although today was difficult at times, they really showed some solid skills. Started in the upper bays for some big trout. Found some very nice speckled trout pretty quickly with some redfish and flounder in the mix. The lack of mullet made things difficult but we stuck 12-15 very nice trout between 2-3.5#. Next, sightfishing was on our minds so we traveled to some very clear water. Immediately found big schools of redfish in shallow water and got to work. It may have been the full moon but these fish were pretty difficult at first but when the tide changed, they really started to bite. Mark and Dave were able to sight fish many redfish in shallow, clear water with some very nice casts and exciting strikes. Even a few double hookups were achieved!!! I enjoyed the awesome view from the poling platform as they picked off redfish along the bank. I hope to fish with both guys again very soon. Challenging but very enjoyable trip for us all. All fish caught on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads and all redfish were sight fished with Johnson 1/4oz. Gold Spoons. Some trout, flounder and smaller redfish went home for the grill.

After a short vacation, I’m back in town and ready to fish. Guided Mr. Rick Sanchez this morning. Rick is the proud new owner of a 2010 Pathfinder 22 and wanted to do some trout and redfishing. Hit the water at 600am and found lots of fish immediately. Found some very nice trout with some small redfish in the mix. Hit some other less productive areas and then got back on track with some big trout and some better redfish. Ended the day looking for those shallow water oversized fish and the jacks but none were found. Great morning of fishing with a fellow Maverick owner. All fish taken on Gulp! Jerkshads and Marsh Works 1/8oz. jigheads. All fish released. No photos today, too busy catching!

For today’s second trip, I guided Steven Quarles. Steve just wanted to pull on fish this afternoon. No problem, right back to the redfish, jacks and the big Spanish mackerel. Topwater was fun and we also got some on Gulp! Jerkys. Finished the trip with some speckled trout and called it a day. All fish released. Dinner at Tuscan and back at it hard in the morning.

Two trips today!  Guided T and Rich this morning. These guys are very good anglers and lots of fun to fish with. Hit the redfish and trout first thing in the upper bays and then headed west to find some pompano. No pompano today so we looked for cobia for an hour. No luck. Headed inside to sight fish some redfish and then found a school of jacks again. Lots of fun on topwater and jigs with light tackle.

Guided Mr. Bob Willice this morning. With some pretty decent success with the pompano last week and over the weekend, we hit the beach for some pompano fishing. Covered almost three miles of beach without a bite or a pompano sighted. Very inconsistent pompano fishing lately. Hit some redfish and Spanish mackeral on the way back. Also sight fished a few redfish inside the bay on some shallow flats. All fish caught on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads and all fish released. Bob and I will hit the pompano again next Tuesday or Wednesday. Bob WILL catch some pompano from the boat on artificials!!

Guided Dr. Roger Orth and friend Carl this morning. Roger wanted a mix of species today and we were up for the challenge. Started in the upper bays early with lots of  nice speckled trout and redfish. The flounder were pretty tough today. After a fish on nearly every cast, we jetted for the beaches to find some pompano. Roger stuck the first fish and then we boated another. A couple more bites and a few dropped hooks then we started catching Spanish mackeral. At the next location, we were greeted by some shallow water over-sized redfish as well as some huge schools of jacks. Lots of fun sight fishing these fish in shallow water on very light tackle. The Yamaha 250 SHO covered over 60 miles of water today very, very quickly. Always a plus for fishing time! All fish caught on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads with Marsh Works jigheads and pink/orange pompano jigs. The Marsh Works jigheads were very impressive on the large jacks.

Redfish University proudly presents the Yamaha VMax 250 SHO. We are thrilled to continue to offer our clients the absolute best in saltwater shallow water fishing!! We just raised the game with the Yamaha SHO!

Just finished breaking in my new Yamaha 250 SHO on my 2009 Hewes 21 Redfisher. This engine is absolutely incredible and I’ve never experienced an outboard like it!! Because I only have 2.2 hours on it, I didn’t go full throttle but I did let it breathe. Shoots the hole in a blind. Hit 64.5 mph with plenty left at 5300-5400rpm with the trim a less than half. Because of my astonishment and my hair being on fire, I didn’t look at the flow but I will really push it tomorrow morning and I will have a better report. I did register 4.6mpg at 46 mph. Equally as impressive was the way the Hewes 21 Redfisher handled at 65mph. No walking, no wiggles. I will hit 70-72mph tomorrow morning, check the fuel flow at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 73 and report back immediately. I will also have some more photos.

Tomorrow morning, Dr. Roger Orth will be the first client at Redfish U. to experience the SHO.  Book your shallow water adventure now!

This engine is thrilling! Eric Holstman

Guided a tough crowd today for a little prefishing in some areas that I haven’t fished in a long time. Brought my dad and brother who always expect an epic morning with me in any conditions. The last of the neap tide again today, but we found plenty of redfish, trout and flounder. Redfish were tough, trout nearly every cast and saw plenty of flounder including a nearly 4# fish caught by young Wesley. All fish caught on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads. Kept some nice flounder and trout for dinner.

Guided Dr. Jay Erickson this morning. Neap tides today but at Redfish U. we expect to catch any fish within casting distance. Doctor’s hours require Sat/Sun trips and today the weekend angler traffic was thrilling. Arrived at our first area very early and was able to stuck some quality redfish and trout before the warriors arrived. Trailered the boat to a new, more isolated location and also found a very slow bite although we managed a 7.5# under 27″ fish. Sightfished the shallows for the rest of the morning with a few redfish taken but they were really difficult. Jay and I will hit them again in a few weeks for a makeup trip since I thought the day was unsatisfactory. All fish taken on Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads rigged with Marsh Works jighead and Johnson 1/4oz. Gold Spoons. All fish released.
